This page concerns specific typefaces and fonts which are likely to be particularly useful to TeX users. For general information about fonts in TeX, see Fonts.
Background
Although it is theoretically possible to use most fonts with TeX, certain typefaces and fonts are particularly well-suited to the task. Some have been specially designed for use with TeX. Others have specially designed support packages. Sometimes such fonts include symbols useful in TeX but typically missing from other fonts. Others are designed for typesetting mathematics or logic.

You may wish to read the documentation and installation instructions prior to downloading the zip archive since the process is less straightforward than it is for most other fonts listed on this page. In particular, you will need suitable tools installed to handle the conversion of the fonts from OpenType (the format supplied by Adobe) to postscript type 1 (the format needed by LaTeX). Arkandis Digital Foundry (ADF)

The Arkandis Digital Foundry offers a number of free, open source alternatives to commercial fonts.
Note: As far as I (--CFR 14:52, 12 April 2009 (UTC)) know, no prepared support files are available to facilitate the use of any of these fonts with TeX with the exception of Venturis ADF which includes LaTeX support as of version 1.004, Libris ADF, Baskervald ADF, Electrum ADF, Romande ADF, Ornements ADF and Symbols ADF. This means that you must either generate the support files yourself (see installing arbitrary fonts for use with TeX), persuade somebody else to do so, or use them with Xe(La)TeX rather than (La)TeX. If you know of additional support packages, do please add them here so that others may find them, too.

Bera

Deja Vu

Extended versions of the Bitstream Vera families with additional glyphs, shapes and weights. I (--Cfr 13:27, 28 October 2008 (UTC)) am not aware of any LaTeX support packages for Deja Vu so either appropriate support files must be generated (see Installing arbitrary fonts for use with TeX) or the fonts must be used with Xe(La)TeX rather than (La)TeX.

European Computer Modern (EC)

An extension of Computer Modern containing many additional characters. In particular, support for the complete LaTeX T1 encoding defined is provided, and a Text Companion Symbol font is included.
The EC fonts are part of TeX Live. The cm-super package, also part of TeX Live, provides type 1 versions of the fonts along with several others.

FauxTeX & Computer Modern

Computer Modern is collection of nine fonts based on the Computer Modern family originally designed by Professor Donald Knuth for his TeX typesetting language. It includes standard Macintosh versions of Computer Modern Regular, Italic, Bold, Bold Italic, Slant, Caps, and Bold Caps, Sans, and Bold Sans. These fonts contain (essentially) the entire standard Macintosh character set, complete with all the special symbols, accented characters, and ligatures. (There are two exceptions: I have replaced the option-f ``florin'' (f) with a double-f ligature and put the Euro currency symbol at option-shift-k in place of the apple.)
FauxTeX is a collection of three fonts that provide a means for creating simple to moderately complex mathematical expressions. These fonts are also based on the Computer Modern family.
- Cymbol serves as a very attractive substitute for the standard (ugly) Symbol font, containing the complete Greek alphabet as well as all the other symbols found in that font.
- MathMode contains all of the Roman alphabet, italicized for mathematical expressions, as well as much of the Greek alphabet and lots of symbols.(If you use a program such as MathType or the small version of MathType called Equation Editor that comes with Microsoft Word, you can get nice results by defining Cymbol as your font for Greek letters and symbols and MathMode as your font for variables and numbers.)
- KahoeTech is primarily for creating expressions that involve superscripts and subscripts. As an extra benefit, you can also use KahoeTech to create fairly complicated fractional expressions. KahoeTech makes it easy to type beautiful mathematical expressions in even the simplest word processors. Both PostScript and TrueType versions are available. Fourier-GUTenberg

The mathematics fonts provided by Fourier-GUTenberg may also be useful with typefaces other than Adobe Utopia. fouriernc, for example, supports their use with New Century Schoolbook for text.

Gentium

Serif font families providing coverage of a wide range of characters and scripts. Three sets of families are available: Gentium supports a larger number of characters, scripts and alternates but currently (2008/10/28) includes only regular upright and italic faces; Gentium Basic and Gentium Book Basic support a more limited range of characters but include upright and italic faces in both regular and bold weights.

The Greek Font Society (GFS)
The Greek Font Society has released a number of fonts in cooperation with the Laboratory of Digital Typography and Mathematical Applications in the Department of Mathematics at the University of the Aegean. The original releases can be found here but TeX users will probably prefer one of the packages prepared by George D. Matthiopoulos and Antonis Tsolomitis which include the necessary support files.

Latin Modern

An extension of Computer Modern containing many additional characters. Currently include 72 text and 20 mathematical fonts. Includes coverage of the T1 and Text Companion Symbol encodings.
Latin Modern is part of TeX Live. To use the fonts with LaTeX, it is sufficient to include the line:
\usepackage{lmodern}
in the preamble of your document.
MacTeX includes an additional installation of the fonts so that they may be used system-wide in any Mac OS X application.
Note that although Latin Modern provides several styles of figures, including old-style, the standard LaTeX package does not enable default usage of all of these. It is therefore necessary either to generate or to download additional support files if you wish to use old-style figures by default, for example. The LaTeX package lmoderno enables the use of old-style figures but I (--Cfr 19:04, 17 September 2008 (UTC)) cannot currently find a working download link. Generating additional files yourself provides even greater flexibility but involves (almost) all of the difficulties involved in installing TeX fonts. The only support package I know of to offer this sort of flexibility is the experimental one I (--CFR 00:01, 11 December 2008 (UTC)) wrote because I could find no alternative. I cannot recommend it as it is inadequately tested but the brave can find it on CTAN.
Even without these additional options, however, Latin Modern provides a very complete set of characters for Latin-based scripts and Vietnamese. On-going development continues to extend coverage to other non-Latin scripts.

The TeX Gyre (TG) Collection

The homepage describes the TeX Gyre project as one which
aims at remaking and extending of the freely available fonts distributed with Ghostscript. The important aspect of the project is providing not only the support for TeX but also the cross-platform OpenType format of the fonts.

All of the Ghostscript text font families have become “gyrefied” as the result of the project. “Gyrefication”, also called “LM-ization”, was first applied to the Computer Modern Fonts and their various generalizations with the result known as the Latin Modern (LM) Fonts.

The package does not provide style files but the included font definition files enable the use of the standard LaTeX font selection commands provided by the New Font Selection Scheme (NFSS).
Because the font definition files have non-standard names, however, it is necessary to load them manually as LaTeX cannot find them automatically given only the family name and encoding. To do this, include a line such as \input Acorn.fd before issuing the font switching commands.

It is our aim to support the many languages of the western background and provide many special characters. Our fonts cover the codepages of Western Latin, Greek, Cyrillic (with their specific enhancements), Hebrew, IPA, etc. Furthermore typographical features exist, such as ligatures, small capitals, different number styles, scientific symbols, etc. Linux Libertine contains therefore much more than 2000 characters.
Some members of the font family are considered complete, others are still undergoing development and others are planned for future releases. See the homepage for details.
The use of Libertine with LaTeX is considered deprecated in favour of support for XeTeX.

xelibertine (but not the fonts themselves) is included in TeX Live.
Note: The CTAN entry for xelibertine describes it as enabling the use of "the OpenType font libertine" in XeLaTeX and links the word 'libertine' to the libertine package. This is not correct. To download the fonts themselves, you should visit the SourceForge page and obtain the OpenType version of the fonts. The libertine package includes only out-dated postscript type 1 versions which lack the features, coverage and corrections included in more recent releases.
LOGO and St. Mary's Road Symbol Fonts

from AMS sent me these Macintosh versions of Taco Hoekwater's Postscript version of the new LOGO fonts (the ones with a P and an S, plus the extra sizes of the slanted variant, and the demibold variant) as well as the Macintosh version of Taco Hoekwater's Postscript version of the St. Mary's Road Symbol font. Both have been tested with Textures, and the St. Mary's Road Symbol font has been tested with OzTeX. He is sure both will work with CMacTeX, but they haven't been tested them with it.
The St. Mary's Road symbol font is a symbol font that logicians and set theorists would find handy, and the newer version of the LOGO fonts contain a P and an S so that one may obtain a logo for META POST that looks like the logo for META-FONT. The St. Mary's Road Symbol font comes with a LaTeX2e .dtx file that will produce the necessary .fd and .sty files for use in LaTeX. The new LOGO fonts are used as always, but if you have a format file which calls on the LOGO fonts, you'll need to regenerate the format files so that the new metrics get loaded into the format file. In addition, you can add \font\sllogonine=logosl9, etc... to gain access to the new variants.
Tom says that I should list him as the contact person for the Macintosh versions of the fonts. Some questions may well be related to the generation of the fonts (he just converted them from their PC version, created the Textures metrics, and the Screen suitcases), and if so, he'll have to bounce those questions to Taco.

Buying Lucida is thus one way to support the development of TeX and the TeX community. TeX/Illustrator Fonts

Alberto Arabia has created a set of fonts for use in Illustrator when working with typeset TeX output. These go at least part of the way in fixing the problem that some versions (in particular, 9.0.2) of Illustrator have with Computer Modern fonts. Alberto says:
It seems that for Adobe the family name of a postscript font should be a prefix of the total font name. In case of CM fonts the family name is always 'Computer Modern" and for latex and ams fonts "Latex" and "Euler", but the total font name of a font like CMR10 is just CMR10 and not "Computer Modern CMR10" and the same for latex and ams fonts. I tried these idea with RESEDIT changing the TotalFontName and it worked, but because there are to many fonts i just redump (with fontlab) the textures postscript fonts changing only the name of the family and it worked again, but now for the hole set of textures postscript fonts.
To install these fonts under Mac OS X, place the entire "TeX-Illustrator" folder in the directory /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/Reqrd/ (for Mac OS Classic, the installation folder is Adobe Illustrator™ 9.0.2:Required:Fonts:).

AquaMints by Pam Grant is a second freeware font available from Galápagos. It features drawings with a beach/ocean theme and is available in postscript type 1 and truetype formats. I (--Cfr 13:43, 24 October 2008 (UTC)) am not aware of any package providing support files for AquaMints but postscript type 1 symbol fonts are among the easiest to install using fontinst. Just be sure to download the package for Windows/UNIX rather than Macintosh.
